  2. Hi! You seem to be having a really fun summer so far! I wish I could go to Chile 😦
So far, my summer hasn’t been that great. I’m actually in India right now, and I’ll be going back in around eight days. But a few days after we got here, my grandfather was hospitalized and a few days after, he passed away sadly. So we’re having a feast in his honor the day before Eid. And then the day after Eid, my brother and I will be leaving to go back.
I hope I didn’t burden you with all that info. It’s nice to see you having a good time. It’s like a never ending summer for you.

    1. Hi Nashwa!

I am so very sorry to hear about your grandfather. And yet how wonderful that it’s almost as if he waited for all of you to arrive there before he needed to be hospitalized — like he wanted to see you first. I’m sure you make him very proud every day with all the wonderful things you do.

Chile was pretty darn amazing and I can’t wait to go back. While we were there we made friends with some people who were impressed with my Spanish accent (which I think is very funny) and they’ve invited us to spend time with them. So that would be really great, to see how “the natives” live there.

Here in DC I have been working to finalize my dissertation and also getting together with former students who are in college or interning (or even visiting) in the area. That’s super fun for me, because you know how much I adore being with all of you. I’ll really miss seeing everyone when school starts next month. In the meantime, I just got back from visiting with my sister and parents in Chicago last week, and so I’m back to organizing and purging things in our condo. Little by little, it’s coming together. I can’t wait until this weekend when my husband is back from a business trip and we can finish the bookshelves on our third floor — we have a TON of books, as I’m sure you can imagine.

Today I drove to a mall in Maryland and my neighbors (who are awesome, BTW) are blown away that I did that — I didn’t think it was a big deal but apparently the highway is tricky. (I thought it was trickier to drive through the middle of DC and not hit any of the tourist pedestrians who aren’t paying attention.)

Anyway, back to finishing my dissertation work — ALMOST DONE! I want to finish this week so I can meet with my advisor and have my defense September 6th. Wish me luck!

Keep in touch and I’ll talk to you soon — safe travels and Eid Mubarek, and again, my condolences to your family.

      Much love,
      Mrs. Cohen
